What is the Schoenstatt Consecration (Covenant of Love)?
The Schoenstatt Consecration, also known as the Covenant of Love, is a form of Marian consecration in the Catholic Church. It is a central element of the Schoenstatt Movement's spirituality.
Here's a breakdown of what it entails:
A mutual covenant: It is an act of consecration to Mary as the Mother Thrice Admirable of Schoenstatt. It's understood as a two-way commitment: you give yourself to Mary, and she in turn acts as your Mother, Queen, and Educator.
Exchange of hearts: The founder of Schoenstatt, Father Joseph Kentenich, described it as an "exchange of hearts," where you offer your weak heart to Mary and she gives you her strong heart, so that you can better live out your faith.
Deepening the bond with Christ: The consecration to Mary is not an end in itself, but a means to grow closer to Christ. Through her, members of Schoenstatt believe they can develop a more vibrant relationship with God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.
A commitment to everyday holiness: The Covenant of Love is a commitment to living a holy life in your daily routine. It's a way of inviting Mary to educate you and help you on your path to sainthood.
Origin: The first Covenant of Love was sealed on October 18, 1914, by Father Kentenich and a group of young men in a small chapel in Schoenstatt, Germany, which is now the Original Schoenstatt Shrine.
In essence, the Covenant of Love is a profound act of entrustment and a commitment to collaborate with Mary in the renewal of the Church and the world.
